Batik Workshop

Batik Workshop

Hot wax, vivid dyes, and the meditative art of batik — an Indonesian treasure.

Batik is far more than a decorative craft — it is a living cultural tradition recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In Indonesia, batik patterns carry deep meaning: they mark life’s milestones, denote social standing, and tell stories rooted in mythology and nature. A hands-on batik workshop in Ubud is your chance to step inside this ancient art form and discover why it remains so central to Indonesian identity.

The process itself is quietly absorbing. Using a small copper tool called a canting, you draw patterns onto cotton or silk with molten wax, carefully controlling the flow to create fine lines and detailed motifs. Once your design is complete, the fabric is dipped into vivid natural dyes — indigo, turmeric, mangosteen — that colour only the unwaxed areas. The wax is then boiled away to reveal your finished pattern. Multiple rounds of waxing and dyeing build layers of colour and complexity, and even a single session will give you a genuine appreciation for the patience and precision the art demands.

You don’t need any artistic experience to enjoy a batik class. Instructors guide you through each step, from sketching your design to the final reveal, and the meditative rhythm of working with hot wax and vibrant colour is deeply relaxing. At the end of the session you’ll take home a piece of fabric that is uniquely yours — a beautiful, tangible connection to one of Indonesia’s most treasured art forms.
