Ubud Museums

ARMA, Blanco, Neka, Puri Lukisan — four world-class collections, one extraordinary town.

For a small town, Ubud punches remarkably above its weight when it comes to art museums. Four outstanding collections sit within easy reach of one another, each with its own character and focus, and together they offer a comprehensive journey through the extraordinary artistic heritage of Bali and beyond. Whether you dedicate a full day to visiting all four or dip into one or two that catch your interest, these museums are among Ubud’s most rewarding experiences.

The Neka Art Museum is the ideal starting point — its thoughtfully curated galleries trace the evolution of Balinese painting from traditional Kamasan wayang styles through the revolutionary influences of European artists like Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet, right up to contemporary Indonesian works. The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) offers a similarly impressive collection set within beautiful tropical grounds, combining Balinese masterworks with significant pieces by Indonesian and international artists. ARMA also hosts regular cultural performances and workshops, making it a vibrant cultural centre in its own right.

For something more flamboyant, the Blanco Renaissance Museum is an experience unto itself. Built as the home and studio of the eccentric Spanish-Filipino artist Antonio Blanco, who settled in Ubud in the 1950s, the museum is as much about atmosphere as art — think lush tropical gardens, ornate architecture, and a collection that reflects Blanco’s exuberant personality. Finally, Museum Puri Lukisan holds the distinction of being Ubud’s oldest art museum, founded in 1956 with the mission of preserving Balinese artistic traditions. Its rotating exhibitions and serene garden setting make it a contemplative counterpoint to the bustle of the main street just outside its gates.

All four museums are within easy driving distance of Kano Sari, and our concierge is happy to suggest an itinerary that suits your interests and energy — or simply to arrange a driver for the day and let you explore at your own pace.
