Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple

Bali's Mother Temple. A thousand years of devotion on the slopes of Mount Agung.

Pura Besakih is the spiritual heart of Bali. Known as the Mother Temple, this vast complex of more than eighty individual temples sprawls across the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, the island’s highest and most sacred volcano. For over a thousand years, Besakih has served as the central place of worship for the entire Balinese Hindu community, and its significance in the religious and cultural life of the island cannot be overstated. To visit here is to step into a living tradition that has endured through centuries of change.

The scale of Besakih is genuinely awe-inspiring. Terraced courtyards, towering meru shrines, and elaborately carved gateways ascend the mountainside in a series of interconnected compounds, each dedicated to different deities and ancestral spirits. On major ceremony days — and there are many throughout the Balinese calendar — the complex comes alive with processions of worshippers in ceremonial dress, the air heavy with incense and the sound of gamelan music. Even on quieter days, the atmosphere is one of profound reverence, with the towering bulk of Mount Agung rising into the clouds above.

The panoramic views from the temple grounds are spectacular, stretching across forested slopes and terraced farmland toward the distant coast. We recommend engaging a licensed guide at the entrance who can illuminate the history and symbolism of what you see — without context, the sheer scale of the complex can feel overwhelming. On the journey back to Ubud, a detour through the beautiful Sidemen Valley makes a wonderful addition, offering some of Bali’s most picturesque rice terraces and a glimpse of rural life that has changed remarkably little over the generations.

We recommend hiring a licensed guide at the entrance — they'll bring the complex to life. Combine with a stop at the Sidemen Valley on the way back.
