Lempuyang Temple

Perched high in the misty mountains of east Bali, Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of the island’s six most sacred directional temples — and home to the photograph that has come to define Bali for the world. The famous “Gates of Heaven” frame a breathtaking view of Mount Agung between two split-gate pillars, creating an image of such dramatic beauty that it has drawn visitors from every corner of the globe. But Lempuyang is far more than a photo opportunity. This is an ancient and deeply revered place of worship, and the sense of spiritual power here is palpable.

The temple complex is actually a series of seven temples ascending the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, connected by a steep path that winds through dense tropical jungle. The climb is a pilgrimage in its own right — misty, atmospheric, and rewarding at every turn. Most visitors focus on the lower temples, but those who venture further are rewarded with increasing solitude and sweeping views across the eastern coastline. On a clear morning, the sight of Mount Agung rising in perfect symmetry beyond the temple gates is one of those moments that stays with you long after you leave Bali.
