The Cranes of Petulu

The Cranes of Petulu

Thousands of white herons. One tiny village. A sunset spectacle like no other.

Each evening in the nearby village of Petulu — just 15 minutes north of Kano Sari — an extraordinary natural spectacle unfolds. From around 5.30pm, thousands of white herons glide in to roost for the night, settling in the trees that line the village road before departing again at sunrise.

The herons’ mating and nesting season coincides with Bali’s rainy months, from November to March. During this time, the birds build their nests, lay their eggs, and raise their young, with chicks taking flight by early March.

Local lore holds a poignant story: the herons first began gathering in Petulu shortly after the tragic events of 1965, and many believe the birds carry the spirits of those who were lost. Whatever the origin, the sight of these elegant, snow-white birds arriving in such great numbers is truly captivating — a peaceful, mesmerising ritual that is not to be missed.
