Mount Batur

Mount Batur

Sunrise over a volcano. Breakfast on the crater rim. A bucket-list Bali moment.

There is a reason the Mount Batur sunrise trek appears on virtually every Bali bucket list. Your alarm goes off at an hour that barely qualifies as morning — around 1:30am — and a driver whisks you north from Kano Sari through silent, darkened villages to the base of the volcano. From there, guided by torchlight and a local trekking guide who knows every rock on the trail, you climb steadily for about two hours through loose volcanic scree and scrubby highland forest. The path is steep in places but requires no technical skill, and the anticipation builds with every step. Then, as you reach the crater rim at around 1,700 metres, the eastern sky begins to glow — and the show begins.

Watching the sun rise from the summit of an active volcano, with Lake Batur shimmering far below and Mount Agung’s silhouette piercing the horizon, is genuinely one of those moments that lives up to the hype. Your guide will prepare a simple breakfast — eggs and bananas cooked by the volcanic steam that hisses from vents in the crater — and for a while you simply sit, warm drink in hand, watching the light flood across the caldera. The descent is quicker, and most trekkers are back at the villa by mid-morning with an appetite and a profound sense of accomplishment.

If the pre-dawn hike is not for you, the jeep tour is an excellent alternative. A 4x4 vehicle takes you up a different route to a panoramic lookout point on the crater rim, arriving in time for the same spectacular sunrise without the physical effort. It is especially popular with families, older guests, and anyone who would rather trade the trekking boots for a comfortable seat — without sacrificing a single degree of that extraordinary view.

The sunrise trek departs around 2am — we'll arrange your guide and driver. If the hike isn't for you, the jeep tour to the summit lookout is equally spectacular.
